- Buchanan fought in the war of 1812.

- Between 1832 and 1833 he served as a minister to Russia.

- A large man, Buchanan reportedly took a great deal of pride in his small feet.

- Buchanan was the first unmarried man to be elected President of the United States. (His fiancee broke off their marriage and died soon after.)

- Buchanan’s running mate was John C Breckenridge.

- Buchanan was a democrat.

- Buchahan had six sisters and four brothers; he was the second oldest of the lot and essentially the oldest sibling, as his parent’s first child (sister Mary Buchanan) died after only two years.

- Harriet Lane was Buchanan’s niece by one of his sisters, and she served as First Lady to the nation.
